The Real Issue

Our society is hotly debating a number of moral issues these days. They are really not Republican or Democratic issues or Conservative or Liberal topics--those are just empty tags. If you blindly follow a label to decide what's right or wrong, you are susceptible to being deceived and will find yourself defending "rights" that are indefensible. This is right because the Republicans think it is or the Democrats think it is are inane arguments. And I think the specific issues distract us from the essential matter. The real issue is who are you going to rely on for your standard of right and wrong. There are only two choices: You can decide that men determine right and wrong for themselves, and then you have a morality that rests on either a majority's opinion or the opinion of a man or group of men powerful enough to make you live under their standard of right and wrong. Or you can rely on a loving, just, holy, compassionate, good God's standard of right and wrong as revealed in Scripture, and then you have a standard that is good for man and society.
On one hand you have a standard that is always changing based on the whims of men or a standard that you are coerced to live under by the powers that be. On the other hand, you have a standard that is founded on love: "You shall love the Lord your God with all your heart, soul, mind, and strength, and your neighbor as yourself." I choose to trust in God's standard and not to live in enmity with His love and will. "Friendship with the world is hostility toward God."
And I find it instructive that those in our society who are hostile toward God's standards are saying and doing the most hateful things. Unless you believe that coercion, intimidation, and unsubstantiated name calling are loving acts toward those who disagree with you and won't be silent.
