Giving to
others is a total commitment of the child of God. It is the exact
opposite of the mindset of the world in which we live. To the world
there are only two kinds of people: the "taker" and the "taken." We
who are followers of Christ are the "taken." We are the "good guys who
always finish last"--while the world mocks. Do not rebel against it.
The one who gives of himself totally, not expecting or demanding
anything in return, exhibits the love of Christ, submits to the control
of the Spirit who indwells and empowers him. He is like his Master and
Savior. The husband, wife, parent, child, or friend who so loves will
know the joy of His blessing and the contentment of His presence even
when betrayed by those he or she loves.
What must we be willing to give? First, ourselves. We must be totally His to use as He sees fit. Then, our love--be it by blessing, doing good, a word of encouragement, or praying for even those who despise us. We must also give our strength to serve others, to "go the extra mile," to support those whose strength is failing. Finally, we must give of our stuff--our possessions, our income. We must redeem the world's things and invest them in the lives of others. Perhaps these things are the least demanding thing to give--if our love is focused on the right kingdom.
Do not be content to give only of your stuff. Be willing to give yourself, your love, and your strength to help those God has put into your life. God demands that His children be givers--just as He is. We are those who as "sorrowful yet always rejoicing, as poor yet making many rich, as having nothing yet possessing all things."
