The Journey

We are all on a journey. Some of us are farther along than others, and some of us are farther along then we imagine. The length of the journey is not what's important. God determines that. What's important is how well we travel. It is the quality not the quantity that must stand the test of time--of eternity.
There are some characteristics of the journey that we all must recognize. The other roads, at times, look better--more appealing. They are certainly more traveled. In addition, we must accept that things get lost along the way. Some we learn are holding us back, and we discard them--even though at one point on the journey they seemed indispensable. Some are taken from us, and we are surprised at what a hindrance they had been without our knowing it. Some of the losses are people we had hoped would take the entire journey with us. But it was not to be. They, on most occasions, finished their journey before us. Sadly, some we love take one of those other roads. And that loss hurts us more deeply than the other. But we will find that they too would have hindered us on the journey home. Also, some of the stops along the journey are the same: Wait Here Awhile; Let Go; Endure For Awhile; Broken Heart; Time Alone; Temptation; Support a Hurting Friend; What in the World Is Going On; Hope-filled Sorrow; Incomprehensible Joy; Unconditional Love; Forgiveness; Another Chance; Grace; Oh, That's What You Were Trying to Teach Me--and other places I'm sure you can remember stopping by--for various lengths of time.
And the journey has some great rewards. We never have to travel alone. We have guidelines for each step--in the darkest night there is a Lamp to light the path. We have a deepening longing for the final step. We are less and less attracted to the side roads. As the body tires, the soul grows stronger. Our list of friends and loved ones that we can't wait to see again--after we see Him--grows longer. Every time we stumble or think we've lost the way, the "traveling pass" still reads, "Admittance Home guaranteed--all fees and penalties paid in full."
We are on a journey. Many have taken it before us and are safely Home. Many walk side by side with us to be our comfort and our guide--that we might lean on them. Many walk side by side with us that we might lend them our strength when they grow tired or hurt. It is not a long journey. It is only the next step. And some day that step will take us into His embrace. And in His presence is fullness of joy. Travel on. The journey takes you Home. And it's the only way to get there--one step at a time wrapped in the arms of Eternal Love.

"And we shall see Him--face to face."
