Inconsistency
I'm
feeling uneasy about the inconsistency I see in the church's support of
free speech in America. And, I think that inconsistency may give some
"fuel" to the idea that Christians are "haters" to some degree. Here's
my problem. I fully agree with the biblical view on homosexuality and
marriage. And the right for someone to express that idea and support
those organizations that agree with the biblical
view. (And I hope that by God's grace I will never be embarrassed to
believe and lovingly defend all that the Bible teaches.) But if I
disagree with the attempt to censure his free speech through an economic
boycott, isn't it then un-American for Christians to economically
boycott businesses such as Home Depot that believe the opposite of what
they believe and support organizations that support their views? Isn't
that free speech, too? And isn't our inconsistency suggesting, at
least, personal prejudice against the members of that group? Doesn't it
legitimately look as if we are hiding "hatred" behind the First
Amendment? And that perception would be devastating to the desire of
Christ to bring all to repentance and salvation, would it not? Just
"food for thought"--for you and me.
